Mission & Shared Values
We want people in the lab to know their value. We foster this by actively encouraging and working towards our mission to provide a supportive research environment where each member gives and receives outstanding scientific training grounded in a growth mindset that focuses on muscle physiology, biology, and biomechanics.
We ensure our mission is on-track by aligning our actions with our values and lab group norms.
Community
- We value all members participating in college life, both in and out of the classroom.
- We strive to acknowledge one another’s achievements and scholarly pursuits.
- We strive to learn about and value one another’s scholarship and research.
- We encourage the development of mentoring relationships.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- We support scientists from all walks of life regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender identify, and religion.
- We aim to provide a supportive and accessible work environment and space for scientists with disabilities.
- We recognize and aim to remove systemic racism and inequity are a major barrier in science and we seek to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our labs and classrooms.
- We encourage the development of mentoring relationships.
Communication and Dialogue
- We value dialogue and contribution from everyone. When some voices are dominating a conversation, we recognize the responsibility of the PI/Senior Students to manage time and encourage others to participate and/or request that remarks be finalized to allow others to participate in the discussion. As a group, we all play a role in supporting and enforcing this effort.
- We listen actively to everyone. We endeavor to assess ideas based on their own merit, not based upon who presents the idea. (discuss the content/data, not presenter).
- We strive to value one another’s professional expertise, input, and ideas. (And lived history/personal experiences). We acknowledge that disagreement can be beneficial. We value disagreeing in a respectful manner and without interrupting. We disagree with ideas, but do not attack the person presenting the idea.
- We acknowledge that body language and facial expressions convey strong messages and make efforts to ensure verbal and non-verbal cues are positive and respectful. No drama.
